In the last day of February 2026, the Elaine Bacon Literacy Program hosted a Wellness Café session titled “High School to College: Ideas for Making It Less Confusing and More Affordable,” presented by Ruth Gill. The event welcomed about 10 participants, primarily from international families and first-generation college households in our community.
For many families navigating the U.S. education system for the first time, the transition from high school to college can feel overwhelming. This session was designed to make the process clearer, more manageable, and more affordable.

One of the most important topics discussed was how international families are often treated differently in admissions and financial aid. Federal and state aid may not always be available to non-citizens, tuition rates may vary depending on residency status, and visa categories can affect eligibility. Understanding these differences early can prevent confusion and help families plan more realistically.
Ruth also shared practical strategies for reducing college costs, including ways students can earn college credit while still in high school. Participants learned about AP classes, dual enrollment opportunities in Michigan, CLEP exams, and Early Middle College programs. For many first-generation families, these options were new and eye-opening. Knowing that students can graduate earlier – and therefore save money – gave families a sense of empowerment.

The session also demystified college admissions. Families learned what colleges typically look for: rigorous coursework, GPA, standardized test scores, essays, recommendations, and extracurricular involvement. Importantly, participants were reassured that most colleges admit a large percentage of applicants, helping reduce the anxiety often associated with the application process.

At Elaine Bacon Literacy Program, the Wellness Café Series supports not only emotional and social well-being but also educational literacy. For international and first-generation families, understanding the U.S. college system is an essential step toward opportunity and stability.
We are grateful to Ruth Gill for generously sharing her knowledge and to all participants who joined this meaningful conversation.

We look forward to continuing to offer sessions that empower families with clear, practical information for their educational journey.
