I was fortunate to discover this group while searching for an opportunity to improve my spoken English and connect with the locals in Houghton. When I browsed the EBLP webpage, it felt like I had found exactly what I was looking for. I was introduced by Jan to Beth’s class, and I joined the classes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, where you can choose sessions based on your own needs and preferences. For me, these two and a half hours each week have been a wonderful way to practice English, correct my pronunciation, and discuss interesting topics with friends—especially the unique experiences they share. Beth has traveled to many countries and places, and she’s always willing to describe each one’s culture and offer helpful information for our questions about life in the U.S.

Our group includes members from Thailand, Indonesia, China, Japan, Brazil, the United States, and more, each sharing the history and culture of our home countries. Using class readings as a starting point, we practice listening, reading, and pronunciation while exploring a wide range of topics. Our discussions cover everything from each other’s countries and the places we live in to themes like health, technology, and history.

As an F2 visa (student spouse/family) holder, even though I’ve been in Houghton for some time, I haven’t had many opportunities to connect with people here. I feel very lucky to have found this group; the Tuesday and Wednesday classes have become an important part of my life, and I’m deeply grateful for everything Beth does to inspire me each week through English practice and all the friends I meet in the class.
