On January 23, 2025, International Neighbors gathered for a delightful hands-on culinary experience led by Kimberly Ann M. Lopez, a multi-talented member of the Michigan Tech community. Kim, who is pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering at Michigan Technological University, also holds leadership roles as the President of the Chi Epsilon Michigan Tech Chapter, Secretary of Canterbury House, and Reporter for The Lode.

This event was more than just about cooking—it was a celebration of culture, connection, and shared enjoyment.
Kim’s presentation was exceptional, as noted by Miyoko: “Kimmy did a great job, and all of us understood her presentation. I asked the group, and everyone truly enjoyed making and tasting Lumpia!”

During the session, Kim not only taught IN community how to prepare both meat and vegetarian versions of Lumpia (read: loom-pyah), but she also shared insights about her home country. Through her engaging talk and an informative video, participants learned about the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage, including its diverse languages—Spanish, English, and Kim’s native dialect—and fascinating traditions.

Miyoko added: “Kim also introduced her country, the Philippines. Watching the video about its culture was great!”

As friends rolled, fried, and savored the Lumpia, the room buzzed with laughter and a sense of togetherness. No leftovers, just lasting memories.
If you missed the event and want to make lumpia, here is the video that could help to do step by step tutorial:
