I’m Yi Wang. I arrived in Houghton three years ago, to support my husband’s PhD study at Michigan Technological University. While adapting to a completely new academic and cultural environment, improving my English and becoming a student at MTU were my top priorities, and joining the EBLP program about a year ago turned out to be one of the most helpful steps I took.
My English coach, Beth, was incredibly supportive throughout the process. During our weekly Tuesday sessions, we focused on pronunciation, listening, and building my communication skills that later became essential when I prepared for the IELTS exam. With Beth’s encouragement and guidance, I eventually achieved a 7.0, which played an important role in helping me get accepted into a Ph.D. program in Environmental and Energy Policy within the Social Sciences department at MTU.
Now, as an upcoming Ph.D. student focusing on renewable energy and local energy systems, I’ve started collecting data through fieldwork and community engagement. I’m really grateful that the people I’ve met—both through my research and at EBLP—have been so friendly and supportive. Since my research involves a lot of communication and interaction, the speaking skills and confidence I gained from EBLP have continued to support me in my daily work.
I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead at Michigan Tech, and I truly believe that the language and communication skills I developed through EBLP will continue to help me throughout my academic and professional journey. For anyone thinking about joining the program, I highly recommend it, since consistent practice in a supportive group really does.
