We are saddened to share the news that our former member, Lida Ryszarda Pelc, passed away on Sunday. Lida was a cherished part of our community, known for her warmth, creativity, and enduring connection to International Neighbors, even after moving away.
Lida first joined the Hancock Home Study Club during the 1989–1990 year and later became an honorary member. She was also an active and long-time member of International Neighbors, remaining on our mailing list long after her move to Marco Island, Florida. She appreciated staying in touch and continued to follow the group’s activities over the years.
A native of Poland, Lida brought a poetic soul to everything she did. She often shared that her “adventure” with writing poetry began right here in Houghton. Her very first poem in English was about snow—a fitting tribute to the winters we all know so well. One of her later poems, “Spring,” was shared with the study club via email, capturing her deep appreciation for the changing seasons and for life itself.
In 2018, Lida was honored with a Doctorate of Letters from the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England, in recognition of her lifetime achievements in poetry. It was a well-deserved accolade for a woman whose words touched many and whose presence left a lasting impression.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lida’s family.
For those who wish to read her work, we’ve included a selection of her poems and pictures.

Lida’s life reminds us of the beauty of language, the power of friendship, and the importance of staying connected across time and distance. She will be greatly missed.
