The Elaine Bacon Literacy Program’s Conversation Partners remain active in sharing varied experiences while building trusting relationships.
Martha and Marjan share an enjoyment of the outdoors, and they have visited various places of interest as they meet each week. Their adventures in recent months have included Hungarian Falls and other scenic hikes. When indoor activities beckon, for example, they’ve visited the Four Seasons Tea Room in Houghton for an elegant cup of tea.

Lois and Aline meet every Friday when both are in town. They enjoy walking and hiking, such as to enjoy the fall colors, as well as attending Friday Coffee. This conversation group meets at 10 a.m. every Friday at the United Methodist Church in Hancock, and all are welcome to attend.
Joye and Cindy also visit weekly when possible, and recently their conversations have expanded to include Pichai as well as Cindy’s husband, Taegyu. Spending time together regularly helps those working to strengthen their English pronunciation, while also creating lasting bonds of friendship and support. As Joye wrote: “I’ve enjoyed the friendship that has developed and time flies by each time we meet; sometimes well over 2–3 hours pass before we say our goodbyes.”
Claudia noted that most of their interactions involve “talking about anything friends might, but I also encouraged her to write to me [based on Natacha’s interest in writing]. … Natacha has encouraged me as much as I have supported her.”
Jan and Sarah enjoyed visiting the Houghton Farmers Market in early fall, as well as strolling along the canal or walking in the neighborhood. Recently Jan helped Sarah learn to crochet, since they share an interest in trying different crafts.
Sometimes life circumstances change, but partnerships continue. Candy and Dejlah now meet online since Dejlah has moved out of the area. They chat regularly to share news, encouragement, and a friendship that began when in-person meetings were enjoyed.
There have been many more partnerships through the years, and we’re always happy to welcome new participants!
