We’re excited to announce a new Spanish Class for Beginners hosted by the Elaine Bacon Literacy Program (EBLP) at the Portage Lake District Library (PLDL). This pilot program is designed to make language learning welcoming, practical, and accessible for adult learners in our community. Whether you’ve always wanted to learn Spanish or are simply curious to try something new, this class offers a low-pressure way to begin building language skills.

About the Class

This is a FREE six-week beginner-level Spanish class for adults, designed for participants with zero or very basic experience. The curriculum focuses on:

  • Basic conversation
  • Everyday vocabulary
  • Simple pronunciation
  • Building confidence in listening and speaking

Rather than heavy textbooks or grammar drills, the class uses interactive learning methods, including movement, songs, and read-aloud activities. The curriculum is similar to a high school introductory level but adapted for adult learners in a supportive environment.

If you already have some basic Spanish and would like to join to see how it feels, you are welcome, though the pace may feel slow depending on your experience level.

Instructor

The class will be taught by Estela Mira Barreda, who brings experience in language education and interactive teaching methods.

Schedule and Location

Day: Thursdays
Time: 1:30–2:30 PM
Length: Six-week pilot series
Location: Portage Lake District Library – West End Room

At this time, this schedule reflects the instructor’s availability for the pilot session. If the program is successful, we hope to continue and explore additional time options in the future, including later afternoons, evenings, or weekend classes.

How to Join

Join this Google Groups to receive class updates, materials, and reminders: groups.google.com/g/eblp-spanish-class–beginners

Children and Families

This class is designed primarily for adults. Children are welcome to attend if they are able to read, write, and participate independently.

At the same time as this class, PLDL offers Storytime for children ages 3–6. If your child is comfortable participating independently (typically age five and older), librarians welcome children to attend Storytime while adults attend the Spanish class in a nearby room.

Attendance and Missed Sessions

Participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as their schedule allows. While classes will not be recorded, learning materials and brief summaries will be shared so participants can catch up if they miss a class due to travel or other commitments.

Class Level

For this pilot, there will be one beginner-level group only. If interest continues and the program grows, additional levels may be explored in the future.

A Community Learning Pilot

This Spanish class is part of EBLP’s ongoing effort to create accessible, welcoming learning opportunities for adults in the Copper Country community. Community feedback is always appreciated and helps shape future programming.

If you have questions, please feel free to reach out. We look forward to learning together.
