Congratulations to our own Puti Ceniza Akbar for winning October’s Do Good in the Copper Country Volunteer award in recognition of her many volunteer efforts in the Copper Country.

We know her work for our website, but how many of us are aware of her many other volunteer enterprises? For instance, even as a Copper Country resident, she still directs the children’s library she founded in her native Indonesia. Her library takes up only one small room in Bandung, West Java but Puti’s volunteer staff move its books to parks and places where children gather. Now Indonesian children can experience the joy of reading books, some of which having once resided in Copper Country homes.

In addition to this exchange of books between the Copper Country and the Pustakalana Children’s Library, Puti also gives presentations to the Portage Lake District Library, International Neighbors, and her children’s classrooms.

Puti’s sincere enthusiasm for helping others stems from a personal joy of learning about and from other people. When Michael H. Babcock, Director of Communications & Donor Relations of Copper Shores Community Health Foundation announced to Puti that she won, her immediate thought was to use this award to encourage others, especially other Muslim spouses from the Muslims Students Association at Michigan Tech, to have courage to be involved in the Copper Country community. Volunteering allows all of us to experience a sense of belonging. Congratulations to Puti Ceniza Akbar!
