On Thursday, September 24th, Elam Mauer, a staff member for the Keweenaw Land Trust led 17 members of International Neighbors and Elaine Bacon Literacy Program into the woods along the Boston Creek Nature Trail in Hancock. Our hike meandered along the Boston Creek through a mixed forest, featuring shale outcroppings, small rocky waterfalls, wooden boardwalks, and a bridge built by community volunteers. Elam identified at least 10 different tree species along the way and told us about how climate and social conditions favor the development of one species over another.
